No.684 Squadron was formed from a nucleus supplied by No 681 Squadron at Dum Dum, India on 29 September 1943. It operated as a photographic reconnaissance covering all areas of South East Asia including Burma, Siam and Malaya. A detachment based in Ceylon covered the Dutch East Indies from September 1944. In October the unit moved to Saigon, Vietnam. It moved on to Siam in January 1946 and was renumbered No 81 Squadron on 1 September 1946.
