No 627 Squadron was formed at RAF Oakington on 12 November 1943 as a part of the Light Night Striking Force. Initial equipment and personnel came from No 139 Squadron. At first the unit carried out night attacks on German targets but from April 1944 it also undertook target marking and photographic reconnaissance. Although primarily a night bomber unit it did undertake some daylight missions towards the end of the war. On 1 October 1945 No 627 Squadron was renumbered No 109 Squadron.
