School trip to Cosford

12 December 2011

"On Wednesday 16 November we visited the Museum and took part in two Education workshops - WWII Evacuee Experience and Key Stage 2 Science. These are some comments made by the children from the visit:-

‘Best school trip ever!...In the evacuation workshop I had to sit at an old desk. The air raid siren went off and we all had to fit into the Anderson shelter. It was very dark an a bit of a squash’ Jack

‘I was very excited to see all of the aircraft’ Nathan

‘The workshops were great fun. I worked with Megan, we made a rocket out of paper and it had four wings and whilst in the air it did many ‘acrobatic skills’. We came fifth in the competition.’ Emily

‘I went to RAF Cosford Museum yesterday it was terrific, also the best school trip ever!!' Leo

‘I enjoyed trying on the clothes and gas masks from World War two. I would recommend this trip to another school because you learn a lot more’ Laura

‘Yesterday at Cosford was a really good day. We did a World War II day. We had to sign our ID cards and experiences what it felt like in an Anderson shelter with thirty people in it.’ James

‘We had a tube, paper and a nose cone. We had to make a rocket out of that. We were allowed to fire our rocket out of an air cannon and my rocket went the furthest.’ Harrison

‘The Cold War Exhibition was really unique because it had a mind blowing array of exciting exhibits’ Alexander

‘Our first activity was to make a paper rocket that would travel to the other end of the hangar. Ours came fourth because it hit one of the barriers! I learnt that the lighter the rocket the further it goes.’ Liam

‘I was very excited to see all of the WWII planes because they looked very interesting.' Chloe

‘Yesterday we went on our school trip to the Museum. I found the experience absolutely fantastic!' Helen

‘It was a once in a life time opportunity to go to a place with lots of amazing information about the World War Two era.’ Andrew "

"The museum experience is World class, unique and should not be missed. We will certainly visit again. However we will plan to visit the cafe between 10am & 11am after which breakfast session ends after just one hour of service and the choice of hot food is limited until the lunch time menu 12 midday.

Superb

10 October 2011

"Visited RAF Museum Cosford on Wednesday 5th October, wasn't sure what to expect.

Was grinning like a fool once I saw the large planes parked outside the place, but I was totally blown away by the vast array of planes on display.

The Cold War Exhibit in particular is stunning to say the least, I've seen Vulcan aircraft do fly-bys, but you don’t appreciate the size and scale of one until you stand under it as you can here.

Spoke to a couple of staff whilst there and both were only too happy to answer my questions and also to point out other things which I had missed.

Enjoyed the visit so much I returned the next day to make sure I hadn't missed anything.

Fantastic value, great place, will definitely be returning again."

"Had a fantastic time at the Open Cockpit Evening last Saturday.

The staff were really nice and very helpful. You can see the passion that they have in the aircraft they preserve.

I would like to thank the guys who were showing me the TSR 2 as they helped me with the cockpit layout for a model I am going to make.

Again I would like to thank all the staff for a great night.

Battle of Britain Weekend

11 September 2011

"Sat 10th Sep 11. A brilliant day out. The engine demonstrations gave the experience of the smells and noise of the Griffon and Merlin engines at close quarters. The many folk in period dress were full of information and were more than happy to chat.

My son really enjoyed the WWII equipment which was on show especially the Tommy Gun and the replica Spitfire.

The highlight for me was speaking to Tony Pickering and I thank him for his time.

Shame the good old British weather prevented the flypast!

Another fantastic visit to a truly great museum."

Great day out

10 September 2011

"Sorry no pictures - forgot the camera! I went to Cosford based on a recommendation and they were right. My son and I had a good value enjoyable day. The aircraft were very impressive to a 5 year old and a mechanical dunce of a mother. My son does not offer praise very often but he said 'Mummy, we have had a lovely day out' - high praise from a reluctant 5 year old. The staff were friendly and helpful. The Battle of Britian commemorations were fantastic. We will be back, with Grandpa in tow. Thanks"

Birthday Visit.

12 June 2011

"My wife, son and his fiancé presented me with a surprise birthday visit to the museum on Saturday 11/06/11. What a wonderful day I had.

The personal tour of the exhibits conducted by Wing Commander Gerald Newton (Rtd) was exceptional. His enthusiasm brought the aircraft to life and his anecdotes of his own service flying in the V Bombers only added to a really enjoyable experience.

We collected a small following on our way round as other people gathered to listen to Gerald's explanations of the exhibits.

A huge 'Thank You' to him and to all who helped to make the day so special. "

Day Trip

7 April 2011

"Having been talked into a day out at RAF Museum Cosford by an enthusiastic work colleague I was indifferent as to what to expect when I got there.

However within minutes of arrival I was gobsmacked at the amount and quality of the exhibits on show. I stayed about five hours and would have liked to have stayed longer.

All the staff I met were both very friendly and well informed. This must be the most underestimated attraction this country should be proud to possess. Unbelievably it is free!!! And I would have been more than happy to pay £15 entrance fee if asked.

Thoroughly memorable and enjoyable experience.

One possible minus point if you’re at all patriotic is you might experience the odd glazed eye or lump in the throat! But I didn’t mind. Please make a donation."

RAF Museum Cosford

9 March 2011

"I would like to congratulate Cosford for their superb RAF museum. With a vast and diverse range of aircraft, I could not help but to be thoroughly impressed. The condition of the aircraft was astonishing, every one looked as if it had just rolled off the production line and was ready for its first flight.

Personally the mere sight of TSR 2 was breath taking.

The displays for each aircraft were fascinating, although in the Cold War Hangar I did miss the specific histories of the displayed aircraft as was the case within the other hangars.

I understand the rare nature of many of the aircraft on show and appreciate the need for them to be preserved at the best condition possible, however would it be possible for any of the aircraft to be opened up so visitors could get a feel of the inside of some of these aircraft? Or perhaps to experience the cramp cockpit of a fighter aircraft?

The museum is superb and I will certainly recommend it to friends and family, and will definately return in the near future for a second visit.

Once again congratulations on an outstanding memorial to the Royal Air Force.

Understanding the RAF roles past & present and a 'Low Rope Challenge'

9 November 2010

"On 3 November 2010, 14 students from Bebington High Sports College visited RAF Cosford Base in Shropshire to enhance their understanding of the Royal Air Force’s roles, and to take part in a ‘Low Ropes Challenge’.
The trip had been organised with the RAF North Wales Motivation Outreach Team, who have worked with the school over the past three years, building the confidence and developing team work of the students as part of the Living for Sport Programme. During the trip, the students were taken on a tour of the Museum, learning all about the RAF from past to present and the heroism of its troops.
The students were split into two groups and the low rope challenge began, rotating around all the activities moving from stage to stage using various pieces of equipment.
This was a tremendous day for our students, who enjoyed their visit, which not only provided an educational day but sowed the seeds in the minds of the students to consider a career in the RAF themselves in the future!
We would like to express our thanks to the RAF and in particular, Corporal Chris Lewis and Sergeant Mike Rees for their continuous support and for their help arranging this wonderful day for the students of Bebington High Sports College. "

Could be outstanding

29 August 2010

"An awesome array of aircraft well worth a visit. A couple of minor flaws. The Cold War Hangar contains too many exhibits for its size resulting in a confusing jumble in the upper gallery! The outlines of the magnificent Vulcan and Victor are lost amongst their overlapping wings and it is difficult to appreciate them from the patches of under-belly that are visible! Remove a couple small planes and spread things out a little. Some steps or a gantry to enable visitors to see inside/over the top of the aircraft would also improve things greatly.

The other two hangars were excellent and made the whole trip worthwhile, especially the presence of the TSR2. A good museum with enough interactive displays to keep everyone entertained."

Disappointed

22 August 2010

"I was very disappointed at the lack of reference to photography at the museum, especially as Cosford is the home of the Joint School of Photography. The disappearance of the Kodak Photography exhibition was a shame. Where is it now?

Ed: The building housing the History of Military Photography was demolished to make way for the National Cold War Exhibition in 2005. Those artefacts that were judged appropriate for the RAF Museum were removed to the museum’s Reserve Collection where they remain in store. There are presently no plans or funds to reinstate the exhibition however we do review this on a regular basis. Thank you for your comments and interest."

The V Force Not Justified

27 July 2010

"The new building where the V bombers are housed is good looking on the outside but, it does not display these aircraft in a way that you can step back in awe of them.

There are too many items in the space that make it hard to appreciate the aircrafts' scale. The building does its job of keeping them safe from the elements but I think a conventional building like Hangar 1, 2 or 3 would be better suited for them.

Ed: Thanks for the comment Dan. We appreciate the time you've taken to make it and the score of 4.5 out of 5 that you have given the Museum.

We receive comments on a regular basis about the NCWE exhibition and take them on board when we look at how we should enhance our displays on this site. Given the limited Hangar space that we have at Cosford, it is not feasible for us to move the V Force elsewhere, but we do receive on a regular occurrence positive comments about the innovative manner in which our 3 V bombers are displayed. Cosford Review

22 May 2010

"The family enjoyed their day out to the museum on Wednesday. We spent about three and a half hours looking round the hangars and exhibits. The site is much improved from my last visit many years ago.

Unfortunately I felt the day was let down by my experience with the Refuel restaurant. Having spent time in a queue to order, I was then told that hot food is only served between 12 and 2:30pm.

When I enquired as to where this was stated I was shown one small line of text under the opening times of the restaurant, which was not clearly visible from anywhere unless you were stood right in front of it.

There is no mention of it on the website either. All the menu's for hot food were still on display, personally I think it would be a good idea to put the service times on the bottom of the menu.

If I had known the cooking times in advance we would have planned our journey to arrive a little later around midday and then the family could have eaten before going into the museum.

Instead of enjoying a meal at the end of our visit we left with two disapointed children (our 3 year old didn't understand why she couldn't have her sausage & chips). We stopped on the way home and spent thirty or so pounds on food which I would have preferred to spend at the museum restaurant, the profits of which I'm sure would have gone into helping preserve the museum for future visitors."

Mr Ashley's Story

16 February 2010

"As a student studying History at University, Cosford was an excellent place to visit. The exhibits were fantastic and the new building housing the National Cold War Exhibition was magnificent both inside and out. It is so wonderful to see such things preserved but the section of the Berlin Wall interested me the most out of all of the exhibits. Although the Planes were wonderful to see nothing was more of a privilege than meeting 95 year old Cyril Ashley, his story about his involvement in World War Two brought a tear to my eye. My generation is lucky to have such people to talk to about something that happened 45 years before we were born, and I felt like this piece of History was the most valuable of my day at Cosford. So I would like to thank Mr. Ashley for sharing his story with me and thanks to him, I will never forget my day at Cosford. "

Our visit on Sunday,15th Nov. 2009

16 November 2009

"Thank you for this opportunity to send in our comments. Christine and myself are pensioners.

We know nothing about aircraft even though we make regular use of them for holidays abroad. I can say I have been in the pilot’s cabin on a flight from Heathrow to Barbados. We enjoyed the visit to your museum and would have no hesitation in recommending a "butchers" to neighbours and friends.

Here are one or two of our thoughts: 1 There is a lack of seating in the display areas. This might be a deliberate policy to encourage visitors to use the cafes but the size of the exhibits and the interspersing of the round cubicles for the video presentations make it a lengthy experience without a break.

The panoramic wall display on the history of flight, year on year, is excellent and illuminating; I never realised the black box was an Australian invention. The wall display shows how brave and fearless the early aviators were and in one sense I felt slightly disappointed not to find a biplane among the exhibits, or perhaps I missed it, we only stayed for about 2 hours.

2. The Rolls Royce engine seems to be a recent addition: there is no write up or explanation of how it works. But I am sure you have that in mind.

3 and lastly, it seems to be a popular museum, the car park was quite full and the public have a keen interest in all things aircrafty, but the danger for simple guys like us is rafspeak, perhaps it is unavoidable. The museum is a must for all students, young and old alike."

"I'd just like to thank the staff and volunteers at the MBCC for making our visit such an enjoyable and informative one. Everyone I spoke to was keen to share the minutiae of what they were working on and how it was done.
Help build a Sopwith Dolphin- what a dream job."

My 1st visit

24 October 2009

"WOW!!! What an amazing museum!
Travelled down from Lincolnshire with a currently serving officer in the RAF, who had been stationed there for some years.
A totally amazing day out, the Cold War museum, surely the jewel in the crown. Will never forget standing underneath the Lightning, suspended from the roof, going for the vertical!!

Also very privileged to be given a guided tour of the Vulcan, by a fantastic member of your staff, who had crew chief'ed on them for 10 years,a thousand thankyous Terry!

An absolutely fantastic day out, I would recommend to anyone from 5 to 85!

I'll be coming back again, real soon!"

"As a first time vistor to the museum, and not knowing what to expect, I was "blown away" by the sheer size and quality.

Well laid out, and the fact you get so close to all the exhibits is great. I would recommend this museum as a must see for children and adults."

Excellent!

27 August 2009

"A museum superbly designed to appeal to anyone of any age with even a slight interest in planes, military hardware or history.

Plenty to do to fill a five hour visit with enough reason to want to come back again.

Most commendable of all: EXCELLENT customer service from all members of staff who are very welcoming to visitors of all ages.

This is a museum for people who do not like museums!"

What a museum!

19 August 2009

"What a superb museum Cosford is, it was our 1st visit to Cosford and both me and my husband were so impressed, both the content, so many aircraft, and the layout, how did you fit so many in? Truly impressive. I found the exhibition of Warplanes particularly poignant.

Could anything be improved, not really, the only problem we had - we spent so long being totally engrossed by the exhibits we were too late to get food in the restaurant!

Looking forward to our next visit, we would willingly have paid an entrance fee to such a site."

First Visit

9 August 2009

"Just visited the museum for the first time today - Fantastic! - Why have I not been before now?
The exhibits are imaginatively presented, and cleverly set in context, especially in the Cold War area.

The supporting information and non-aircraft items help to re-create the mood of the time, and I found myself returning to exhibits to follow-up information learned from other displays.

A great day out - The sausage and bacon buns in the restaurant are not to be missed, and even the car park attendant was friendly and helpful.
I will be back again soon!"

Superb Collections

5 August 2009

"I have visited the museum over twenty times during the past ten years and have never been disappointed by any of the changes or improvements carried out at Cosford. It just gets better and better ... and it was superb to start with!

The staff are friendly, approachable, and very knowledgeable. The nature of museums with static displays, such as the aerospace museum, is such that there is often very little to keep kids occupied but I have very rarely seen visiting children not looking completely 'gobsmacked' at the exhibits. There is plenty of space for them to safely run-off some excess energy on the green areas outside the Welcome Centre too.

As for the new Cold War Exhibition -- what can I say apart from that it is superb, breathtaking, enormously fascinating, and a hugely important educational tool and reminder of the "developed" world's crazy policy of Mutually Assured Destruction (remember we still lived under the threat of nuclear armageddon well into the 1980s !).

All in all, a day out at RAF Museum Cosford cannot be too highly recommended.

Please do not forget that parking is not free after August 1st, so remember to take some money."

One of the best days out we've had for ages!

31 July 2009

"Having visited the museum several times since the 1980s, we visited again on 28th July 2009. I was astounded as to how superbly it continues to develop. The new 'Cold War' exhibition in the incredible new hangar is nothing short of stunning, and brings the whole subject to life. It is brilliantly assembled and excellently thought-out. My family found the whole museum fascinating. A real credit to everyone involved. Thank you from all of us. (ps: please continue to preserve the beautiful Britannia - she deserves it!)"

"I have been going to Cosford since I was about 7 years old with my family and now I am 15 years old. I always go every year and we have an amazing time. I missed it last year and I hope to go again in June if I don’t I will miss it because it is an amazing day out for all the family the women have a market to go round the men have the air show which even women and children like and there is also a fair which I love going on with my family.

I hope you can enjoy the day as much as we always do. If you do not go, you will be missing out on a brilliant day. So if you can please go because it is amazing. The staff are all friendly and you can even get the signatures off the pilots who fly the red arrows and the other pilots."

Great!

10 May 2009

"It was a long time since my last visit to a museum - normally that is not my piece of cake - but this was really a big hit. We spent maybe 4 hours and did not see everything in that time. If ever possible, I will come back to see what I missed the first time.

Unfortunately our return to (hotel in) Birmingham was a mess - due to trains that did not show up waited about 3 hrs in the cold - finally had to search for a taxi)."

Great Day Out!

12 April 2009

"Thank you to all at the RAF Museum located at Cosford. I am an ex-soldier myself and love anything to do with military history. I work as a museum manager myself and I found the RAF Museum Cosford to be by far the most well run, most clean and most well laid out museum in the U.K.

The staff were helpful and polite and displays are just fantastic with an outstanding and fun kids learning area.

I would also like to thank the children's guide who let us sit in the Jet Provost and gave us a talk on the controls. We loved every second of this museum. It took us 2 hours to enjoy the whole site. Well done to the staff and RAF Museum Cosford for such a great day out."

V Force missed opportunity

19 March 2009

"Overall the museum is a class act and I will visit again, however I'm slightly disappointed at the way in which the V Bombers have been displayed.... all you get to see is the undersides as they aren't visible from the high level gallery.

In my opinion these superb aircraft should have been sited in the lower part of the magnificent new hangar where you could have looked down on their awesome profiles.

"Between Christmas and New Year (2008) my father-and-law and I visited RAF Museum Cosford. This is just a short note to tell you how impressed we were with the museum. I particularly liked the Cold War Exhibition. Not just the military equipment that was on display but also the information regarding the overall impact on society (both here and on the other side of the Iron Curtain) during this period in recent history. Very moving...
