After 35 years the American forces failed to achieve what they had set out to do. Frustrated by an effective guerrilla campaign led by the Vietcong was one element.

Also the North Vietnamese had vital and important military backing from the Soviet Union and China. Lastly by 1968 opposition in America to the Vietnam War had grown so intense that many of the draftees were beginning to question the necessity of such a far-off war.

Almost 4 million people died in the Vietnam War, and once again the resolution to push back communism had failed.
