No 78 Squadron was formed at Newhaven on 1 November 1916 as a home defence unit. The unit was involved in anti-Zeppelin and bomber aircraft operations throughout the war. It Disbanded on 31 December 1919.

On 1 November 1936 the squadron reformed at RAF Boscombe Down as a night bomber unit. On the outbreak of war No 78 Squadron was designated a reserve training unit. On 19 July 1940 it reverted to an operational status taking part in the bomber offensive throughout the war. In May 1945 No 78 Squadron became a transport unit in the Middle East. It disbanded on 30 September 1954.

On 15 April 1956 No 78 Squadron reformed in Aden to provide transport for Army units in the area. In June 1965 it converted to helicopters. In October 1967 it moved to Sharjah disbanding on 1 December 1971.

On 22 May 1986 No 78 Squadron was reformed from Nos 1310 and 1564 Flights based at RAF Mount Pleasant, Falklands. It is the only RAF squadron permanently posted on the islands and undertakes a transport and search and rescue role.
