No 680 Squadron was formed at Matariya, Egypt on 1 February 1943 from A Flight, No 2 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit. It undertook photographic reconnaissance missions over North Africa until April 1943 when it moved forward to Tunisia and switched its focus to Sicily, Sardinia, Greece and Crete. In June 1943 it returned to Egypt and concentrated on enemy targets in the eastern Mediterranean. At the end of the war detachments were based in many parts of the region undertaking aerial survey work. It moved to Palestine in July 1946. On 1 September 1946 the unit was renumbered No 13 Squadron.
