No 176 Squadron formed at Dum Dum, India on 14 January 1943 from a detachment of No 89 Squadron. The unit became operational immediately as a night fighter squadron. A detachment was sent to Ceylon in September 1943. In January 1944 the squadron began operating over the Burma front. Between August 1944 and April 1945 the unit was based in southern India but then returned to Burma. The unit disbanded on 31 May 1946.
