Weapon Class

Overview

County: United Kingdom

Commissioned 1947-48. Originally built as fleet escorts with good anti-submarine and anti-aircraft qualities but retaining torpedo armament for attacking major surface units. The multiple unit machinery arrangement had boiler and engine rooms alternated, lessening the risk of total loss of power due to battle damage.

All four underwent basic conversion to air direction radar pickets 1958-59, with prominent aft lattice mast added to carry a large radar scanner and retaining main gun armament.

Of these, Battleaxe was scrapped in 1964, Crossbow was used as a harbour training ship at Portsmouth from 1967, being scrapped January 1972; Broadsword expended as a target in 1968 and Scorpion was scrapped 1971 after use at the Naval Construction Research Establishment, Rosyth.
