Swiftsure Class

Overview

Swiftsure Class

Nationality: United Kingdom

The Swiftsure Class were the United Kingdom’s second generation of SSNs. They were designed to provide a greater volume and a stronger pressure hull. This would allow them to carry more equipment and operate at greater depths than previous boats.

The Swiftsure Class were deployed during the Cold War both as ASW screening for surface task forces but also as independent anti-ship and anti-submarine hunters. The Class operated for the first time under the northern Arctic ice packs in 1976. This had become an increasingly used area by Soviet nuclear ballistic submarines.

Spartan and Splendid were both deployed to the South Atlantic during the 1982 Falklands Conflict.

All the Swiftsure Class were in Royal Naval service at the end of the Cold War.
