Some of the significant dates in the history of the Berlin Wall

1945 May 8 Berlin is divided into four sectors, the American, British and French in the West and the Soviet in the East
1946 October 29 A 30 day valid Interzonepass is required to travel between the sectors in Germany
1948 June 23 Western Zones introduce a new currency into their sectors
June 24 Beginning of the Berlin blockade
June 25 Berlin Airlift begins
1949 May 12 End of the Berlin blockade
May 24 Federal Republic of Germany is founded
(West Germany)
September 30 End of the Berlin Airlift
October 7 German Democratic Republic is founded
(East Germany)
1952 May 26 Border between East and West Germany and East Germany and West Berlin is closed.
The border between East and West Berlin remains open
1953 June 17 An uprising of East German building workers is suppressed by Soviet tanks
November 14 Western powers waive the Interzonepass. Soviet Union follows but insists that an East German citizen needs permission to travel to the West
1957 December 11 Leaving East Germany without permission would result in a prison sentence of up to three years
1961 August 13 Barriers are built between East and West Berlin
August 14 Brandenburg Gate is closed
August 26 All crossing points are closed for West Berlin citizens
1963 June 26 Visit to West Berlin by President J.F. Kennedy who says -'Ich bin ein Berliner' - I am a Berliner
1987 June12 President Ronald Reagan visits Berlin and urges Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin wall
1989 September 10 Hungarian government opens the border for East German refugees
November 9 Berlin Wall is opened
December 22 Brandenburg Gate is opened
1990 October 3 Germany is reunited
