| 1949 | May 12 | End of the Berlin blockade |
| May 24 | Federal Republic of Germany is founded (West Germany) |

| 1952 | May 26 | Border between East and West Germany and East Germany and West Berlin is closed. The border between East and West Berlin remains open |

| November 14 | Western powers waive the Interzonepass. Soviet Union follows but insists that an East German citizen needs permission to travel to the West | |
